Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer: The Musical – a FLASH Giveaway!

Last year my littles and I went to the see the opening of the brand new musical Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer.

It was SO cute and SO much fun! My kids loved loved it and I thought it did the original TV show much justice. They didn’t try to change it, which I think was my biggest fear. That the producers would try to re- interpret the show. It’s stayed true to the much loved 50 year old classic TV Christmas special. The story, sets, characters, and songs were all familiar. Even the voices were spot on! The crowd of parents delighted when Rudolph squealed “I’m cuuuuuute!” and broke out in applause when the Prospector first bounded on stage! Because it was familiar. We were connecting to it on a memory level. And it ended with a bouncing snow flake sing a long!
I just quoted myself ;-)

It’s really the perfect starter show for kids. It’s not in any way pretentious and you’re out of there in an hour and a half. The performers keep them entertained the whole time!

Wanna go? Tomorrow night? I have a flash giveaway for a Family 4 Pack. Just leave me a comment below.

No widgets or hoops to jump through. Just comment on your memories of the show you watched every year as a kid, or tell me your secret holiday wish?

Winner will be announced at NOON tomorrow. So you gotta be ready to GO!

Happy Everything 2014

xmas20141

I have been saying NO to my kids for so long about getting a video game that they have stopped asking. So I figured it was a good time to get it for them. They would never see it coming!

You know how much I love surprising them, it’s my favorite thing!

Wait till you see. They really never saw. it. coming. They still weren’t sure after they reacted and were looking right at it. SO funny!

Then they danced :-)

Happy Everything to you and yours!

We wish you all kinds of great surprises and awesome dance breaks all year long.
Happy 2015!

I found JOY at Irving Berlin’s White Christmas

Look at this! That little kid getting the autographs? My boy! He was in the Globe too.

I have been in a scroogey, bah humbuggy, blerrrrrrgh to all things holiday mood for a while now. I do not know why. I can’t explain it. I have small kids, this time should be magical. That’s what everyone tells me anyway. But here’s where I get scroogey – it’s a lot of work. So many things, to do, and buy and make. It all just seems like too much sometimes.

I ran a giveaway for Irving Berlin’s White Christmas last week. I almost didn’t because I didn’t want to do the work. But then I thought just because I am in a foul mood doesn’t mean that someone else (read you my lovely and precious few readers) might like to go. That someone else might be in a joyous holiday mood. So I ran the giveaway. The winner was super excited to go!

Now it’s confession time. I have never seen the movie White Christmas. I get funny crinkled up nose looks when I’ve told people that in the past week.

“Really?” they say.
Really.

I almost didn’t do the giveaway which brought people joy. I almost didn’t go the show which brought me joy. I almost didn’t take some friends, who were thrilled to be able to go, joyous in fact. I almost didn’t go the red carpet beforehand which led to so much joy for my son.

IMG_8141

So all that joy and goodness and love and I almost didn’t get to do any of it. I almost didn’t go when the worst thing that could’ve happened was that I saw an awesome show. And it was awesome. The tap dance number in the middle of the show was worth the effort alone.

If you’ve seen the movie you’ll love the show. My friend that came with us has seen the movie many many times and she thought it was fantastic!

I just read this quote on someone’s Facebook page “What if Christmas, he thought, doesn’t come from a store? What if Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more?” Dr. Suess.

I needed a reminder that the holiday season means a little bit more. Joy. Bringing other people joy. And joy for me. Yes please, MORE JOY FOR ME :-)

Do you need some joy?

White Christmas is playing at The Wang Theatre through the 28th of December. You should go get some joy.

Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer: The Musical – A review

Rudolph1

Yesterday I posted to my Facebook page that we were headed “Off to Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer- The Musical! “She thinks I’m cute. She thinks I’m cute!” The TV show on stage.”

To which someone replied “How do you all do this on weeknights? I won tickets but had to turn them down because I fear my kids would be dysfunctionally tired the next day.”

Perhaps my kids ARE dysfunctionally tired the next day. But they’re at school. I have no idea :-) I keed, I keed!

My oldest frequently stays up MUCH later than we were out last night. My middle is a trooper, like all the time. She is a classic no drama middle child. My youngest rests on me during the whole show and promptly falls asleep as soon as he gets home.

Are they tired the next day? Yes. Dysfunctionally? No. They all got up and did everything they were supposed to do and off they went to school. Will it effect their school day? Perhaps. But I think it’s worth it. I do ticket giveaways and reviews specifically so my kids have the opportunity to go to these events. And they LOVE it. I love that I’m am instilling in them an appreciation of theater and cultural events. They’re learning to be entertained by live performances and not just over the top special effects 3D ninja movies (although we love those too).

I will admit I did not have high hopes for this production. I don’t know why, call me a cynic, a pessimist. Whatever. I just did not think it was going to be good. I grew up watching Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. It’s a classic! I had no idea how that would translate to the stage as a musical. I was….skeptical.

After it was over and we got in the car and noticed we’d be home before 9:00 I was even more pleased. Then I thought of Julia, the woman that commented on my status. I was sad that she didn’t get to go. They would have been home much earlier than she imagined!

To that point I think that it’s a great starter musical theater show. For kids who have never been to the theater or for moms afraid of keeping littles out too late – it’s perfect. The show starts at 7 and is over at 8:30. The theater is full of kids being kids. It’s a great place to teach your littles about how to behave in the theater without the fear that they will ruin the experience for others. Try taking a 4 year old to the Nutcracker and you’ll know what I mean :-)

The Nutcracker 2014

Oh how we love the Nutcracker! We shared our love a couple of weeks ago with a giveaway. We love that too! I feel especially like Oprah when I get to give stuff away. I just wish I could give more! You get Nutcracker tickets and YOU get Nutcracker tickets and YOU get Nutcracker tickets!

My little girl was so very excited to go this year. The last time we went she was 4 and it didn’t go quite as well as I expected. This year was a wholly different experience! She talked about it for weeks in advance. What we would wear, where we would go, who we might see.

Nutcaracker20142

We went out to dinner beforehand then ran across the street to meet friends for hot chocolate. It was a wonderful mother daughter event in the city.

Nutcaracker20143

We made our way into the Opera House and the magic began. The Opera House is just stunning. It’s one of my favorite venues in the city.

Nutcaracker20144

Before we found our seats we stopped at the merchandise to find the ballerina! I have also heard about the ballerina for weeks :-) The last time we were here I let her get a souvenir. She chose a very sweet Clara doll. Apparently her friend at school “had the ballerina that looked just like Clara”. She wanted her too! We found her – turns out it was the Sugar Plum Fairy doll.

Nutcaracker20147

Doll firmly in hand we found our seats and then went to visit the orchestra pit. She loves to watch the musicians warm up and wonder aloud why they’re all wearing the same thing (black) and why they’re all playing different music that doesn’t sound so good (practice).

Nutcaracker20145

And so it begins! Her favorite parts are the mice and the dancing bear, of course.

Please see my post The Boston Ballet’s Nutcracker – 5 reasons to go if you need a gentle nudge to get your tickets!
