Elf the Musical

My family went to Elf the Musical last night…oh what fun!

If you are a fan of the movie you will like it, if you haven’t seen the movie I think you’ll like it even more. My son and I had a differing opinion on whether we like it more or less than the movie. He liked it more, like WAY more. I liked it less, but only a little bit. I think it’s because I kept comparing the musical’s Buddy to Will Ferrell’s Buddy. Which is ridiculous! I think I may just have a crush on Will. There I said it.

The sets were really great. The singing, amazing…the boy playing Buddy’s little brother has quite a career ahead of him. Top notch dancing. I don’t know why I wasn’t expecting the dancing to be good. I guess I just really didn’t know how they would adapt the movie to the stage. Some changes were made, but all of them necessary to put it to music and on the stage, and didn’t take away from the story you would know. Let’s not forget the orchestra in the pit! Carrying the show along beautifully. There was one bit where Buddy took the bells from the lady with the red bucket on the street…both Buddy and the guy on bells had a moment there. Funny and really well done. How often do you get a BELL solo?!

My kids are 7,9, and 11. I would say that the show is PG for sure. Lots of innuendo and sassy dancing in some parts. My 7 year old was unfazed by any of it. My 11 year old knows what’s up. It was touch and go for the 9 year old, who has a tenuous grasp on the magic of Santa and adult relationships ;-)

All in all a super fun night out! The cast, from chorus all the way through to Buddy, was awesome.

I’m giving it a You should go!

Step right up to Circus 1903 – Review and Discount

We went to see the Circus last night at the theatre. Yes, you read that right. The theatre with a circus.

Circus 1903 is at the Wang Theatre in Boston through the weekend (March 8-12).

It was so much fun. It was America’s Got talent with an old-timey feel. There was everything you’d expect to see at a circus: acrobats, contortionists, jugglers, aerialists, high wire, and more. And even elephants! They were puppets, but so well done that there were moments I forgot they weren’t real. Gorgeous artistry and puppetry.

It was a roller coaster of emotions. At times I wasn’t even able to look because I thought someone would fall (and they did!!). Other times, I couldn’t look away. The aerialist on the hoop was one of the most beautiful acts I have ever seen. I had no idea I would be so moved by it. And laughter, the Ringmaster wove everything together seamlessly and with some giggles (admittedly some were provided by my own kid).

I took my three children aged 10, 8, 6. All of them sat through the whole thing with only the littlest getting a bit antsy. It was just over two hours long with a 20 minute intermission. I think it’s also appropriate to go with no kids! It’s good fun.

Naturally, if there was audience participation, my family would be involved…

You should be off to see The Wizard of Oz in Boston

You should go to this show.

This new production of The Wizard of Oz is an enchanting adaptation of the all-time classic, totally reconceived for the stage. Developed from the ever popular MGM screenplay, this production contains the beloved songs from the Oscar® – winning movie score, all the favorite characters and iconic moments, plus a few surprises along the way, including new songs by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber.

The Wizard of Oz is at the Citi Center Wang Theatre in Boston through April 24th.

My family and I went to the show on Wednesday night and it was SO GOOD! I had three generation of Oz fans in attendance. My mother, me and my three kids. We all loved it. Four out of five of us had seen the movie. The 5 year old had seen it but didn’t remember it. It didn’t stop him from enjoying the show. He only started to fade in the last two minutes of the show. It was 9:25 after all. So it was to be expected. My mom had a smile the whole show. The 9 year old was literally sitting on the edge of his seat. My 7yo girl sitting next to me was squeezing my hand evertime Dorothy sang.

In my time as a blogger I have been able to see many shows and come back here and tell you all about them.  I like some, really like others, but this one…I loved.  Like I would go see it again, loved. We attended the yellow carpet arrival of Dorothy, Toto, and the Muchkins.

The show stayed true to the movie and gave it a few new songs and some new, funny modern dialogue. I’ll let you see for yourself how they handle the tornado and the flying monkeys. It’s good stuff. The Wicked Witch even makes an appearance in the audience at one point.
