His ‘n Hers

Hubs made us some kettlebells over the weekend to kick off Month 2 of the 4-Hour Body. I am a full foot shorter than him, hence the drastically different sizes. We need a couple more plates for him and we’re good to go!

His n Hers homemade kettlebells.

Here’s how he made them.

The first video is the swing and the second is making your own kettlebells. You can get all the stuff at the hardware store.

20 Days

There are 20 days until I’m 40 years old.

I took to the internet a couple of weeks ago and let you all in on some goals and simple ways of being I’d like to create before I turn 40. You know, try to be a grown up.

So do you want to know how I’m doing??

First thing is I am back to my pre-baby weight!  Well my pre 2nd & 3rd baby weight.  If it was first baby weight, that would bring me back to 2005 and that would be my wedding weight.  I’m not even sure I want to be all the way there again, but I’ll see.  I owe it all to the 4-Hour Body.  It’s been a small sacrifice to change the way I eat for a while, and the numbers don’t lie. I didn’t participate in much of the exercise part of my first post because that wasn’t a part of the 4-Hour body regimen.  I do Jillian’s 6 pack ab or Shred 2 times per week and Tim Ferriss’ 6 minute abs. Already seeing some definition! Hubs is going to make us some kettle bells this weekend.

Getting our financial house in order has meant ditching Bank of America.  We are now in a more local bank. The kids have passbook savings -how cute is that. Teaching my kids about money, that’s grown up  right? I have gotten into the meat of Mint.com to get a better handle on our finances.  We will be paying down our debt AND saving for Disney.  How bout them apples?

We had a Sunday Dinner and it was lovely.

The friend thing has not gone as well. Sometimes I get so caught up in my own life and my own day that I forget to reach out beyond these four walls and this screen. I did have a date with the BFF but I bailed because my kids have crazy nap time schedules and on that particular day they were opposite.  The we got the stomach flu and I didn’t want to go near anybody for weeks. So…I do have a girls night scheduled for next week to talk more about our 40th Birthday Party extravaganza (that’s another post :-)

The schedule is taking shape.  The baby is a bit more predictable these days, two naps at regular times. Big boy and I have come up with lessons for the afternoon. I think he needs his time scheduled more like preschool, so he knows what to expect. It would probably help me too. AND potty training. Hallelujah! Potty training Bunny is going really well.  She actually told me yesterday she needed to go and high tailed it to the potty. Awesome!  I can almost see the light at the end of the 2 in cloth diapers tunnel.

My husband actually wrote me a love letter for Valentine’s Day – I didn’t think he would remember.  But HE DID!  We went out on a date night too.  So that’s a start.

There you have it. Things are going well.

A fully realized grown up I am not.

Maybe someday…

Nah.

4-Hour Body Recipes – A list and a plea

Of the many fantastic things in the The 4-Hour Body, one of the flaws of the book is that there are so few recipes.  I know he didn’t set out to write a cook book, but c’mon!

So I made it my naptime mission to find some delicious recipes that could maybe hide some of those beans under or in something more yummy.  Unfortunately there is not so much going on out there on our usually overflowing with information internets.

I did find this gem on Robb Wolf’s website ( a really great resource on the Paleo diet, he wrote the book “The Paleo Solution”).
This is a .pdf from Tim called The Slow Carb Cookbook. Nice!

A quick list of recipe sites.  Because the 4-Hour Body is so new there aren’t many.  I have searched for a while and really this is it folks.

In no particular order…

4-Hour Body Week 1- the breastmilk bonus

Week one of  The 4-Hour Body DONE!!

I didn’t post about it yesterday because I was too busy stuffing my face and having yet another snow day with the kids.

Here’s how it all shook out.

Combined 8 lbs and 3.75 inches lost.  Not bad right? It was skewed in husband’s direction. Men. Hrmpf.

To sum up the 4 Hour body in an I skimmed the chapter because I have three kids and I just want to lose this fat this is what I think it’s all about kinda way…here goes. It’s a slow -carb Diet. It’s all about accelerating fat loss. Not necessarily weight loss. You eat three to four meals a day that consist of protein, legumes, and vegetables. No white carbs, sugar, dairy, or fruit. You eat like that for 6 days then on the seventh day you can eat what you want.

For the most part everything thing was fine.  The food was just ok for me, dawg.  I love bread and chips and pasta so the no carb thing was difficult I’m not gonna lie. Breakfast was like taking medicine for me. I frequently don’t eat breakfast and when I do it’s waaaay after I’ve woken up. It was very hard to eat a full breakfast that was partly made up of beans a half hour after waking up.

I tried to prepare the same meals over and over again just because it’s easier for me to just get it done that way. Trying to be creative takes is too time consuming when I’m also making food for the kids.

On the 6th night I was over it! My chili didn’t come out like I wanted it to and I was pissy. “I’m over it.” I told my husband. He reminded me we could eat whatever we wanted the next day. Sooooo…

I’m not really a crazy junk food eater, but we sure do love our tortilla chips ’round here.  We only had a quarter of a bag left which we amazingly didn’t eat all week. Steve got the bag out for lunch and I sneered at him “You better not eat that whole bag!” Did I mention it was a snow day?  We couldn’t leave the house in the morning to get anything. Steve shoveled himself out to get some pizza for dinner though. Oh and I had three wonderful giant lattes.

The strangest and most awesome benefit of this WOE (way of eating) is that I have increased my breast milk supply. Yup. More milk. I couldn’t believe it.  I have a low supply so it was odd that my baby was whining a bit more to nurse. And then I noticed that one of my milk ducts was hurting like it was full. Then he had a few poops that were totally breast milk poops. Moms of breastfed babies will know what I mean- a little grainy and sweet smelling. He hadn’t had one those since he was two month old.
BreastBook

I bet that isn’t something that Tim Ferriss tested out :-) He could have a whole new book aimed at the post partum breastfeeding set if you ask me.  Lose weight and increase your breast milk supply at the same time. Brilliant!

I am sort of dreading starting it up again tomorrow. I think I may not be as strict with the menu.  Allowing a bit more of the foods that we like or less of the foods that we don’t. All in all, I feel better and dare I say it, I look better.  I really do. I can actually see a difference.

So moving on to week 2. I wonder what the numbers will say next time.

40 days

There are 40 days until I’m 40 years old.

I’m having a pretty hard time wrapping my head around that right now.  Not because I feel old, because I don’t.  That’s the point I guess I still feel like a twenty year old, in my head, sometimes. I can’t even believe I’m a grownup. I have kids!  I’m somebody’s wife. Good God when did all that happen? Aren’t we going out dancing tonight?

I have forty days until I’m forty and I’m going to make the most of it.  I am going to start my 40th year fit in mind and body.  Organized and in control.  A grown up.

Today I started Jillian Michaels‘ Six Pack Abs to try to reverse the damage three kids have done to my mid section. I am reading The Four Hour Body by Tim Ferriss to lose fat and live better and longer.  I don’t just want to be skinny again, although the thought of wearing my white capris again this summer does make me a bit giddy. I want to be fit. I want to have more energy. I want to be a fun mom that isn’t always tired.

I have incredible friends that I don’t spend nearly enough time with.  I need to pick up the phone and get in the car more.

The same goes for my family.  More Sunday dinners and time well spent together.

We changed banks and in the process of saying goodbye to the evil empire (BOA) I will say hello to a budget. Financial reform starts at home.

Get my kids on a schedule.  The baby is finally ready and Big Brother needs it.

My husband, oh my husband. We need more date nights. More girlfriend/ boyfriend time.

Lots of stuff here and I know I’ve missed some because I only just realized 15 minutes ago that it was 40 days till 40, and gosh that’s a good blog post, right.  I had a few minutes with no kids yelling at me so here I am.  I’ll fill it in as I move through these forty days. No time like the present, right?  I could just sit here and think about all the things I want to improve.  I could even just write it down.  Then what?  Well when I hit publish you know about it too.  The universe KNOWS!

Let’s go!

How did this happen?

And yes, there is a before body picture that I will only post AFTER!
