You take the good, you take the bad

you take them both and there you have…are you singing it yet? Here it is – your ear worm for today.  You can thank me later.

Anywhoo…so there I was nursing the baby, which is no easy feat these days.  He is big and unruly and easily distracted.  I have a low supply so when he wants to nurse, I’m on it. No delays. And I’m in it for the long haul.

Yesterday it coincided with S’s nap time.  Husband and big brother were at skating.  I told S that she needed to go up for her nap soon, that I would bring her up when I was done. She complained. Loudly.  I reminded her that her cousins were coming over and she needed to nap before they got here.  By the time she was done they’d be here! Yay! Well that worked  – too well it seems. She was already headed up the stairs.

I said “Honey girl, I can’t go with you I need to finish nursing the baby.”

“I go mama. Don’t worry.”

“No wait for me sweetie.  In a minute we’ll go.”

“I go mama. I close the door.”

“Sure” I say “You go ahead. (yeah right).  You close the door get in bed and have your nappy.  Blow me a kiss.”  She blows me a kiss and steps up a stair and out of sight.  I hear the door close.

And then nothing.

Five minutes…nothing.

Ten minutes. Twenty minutes.

What the hell?

I go upstairs.  Nothing.

She has PUT HERSELF TO NAP.

I am giddy. Proud of her. Proud of ME.

Two and a half hours later…

I’m upstairs rushing around getting ready for my sister and her family to come over.  I hear her moving around in her room I decide to finish what I’m doing then go get her.  I hear knocking on the door.  Not my sister at the front door, but from S’s room.  “Mama, mama?” Doorknob turning but not opening. “Can you help me?”

I open the door, to this…

oh em gee

I can only imagine her in there either like a princess putting on her night cream or like a warrior putting on warpaint.  Knowing my sweet girl like I do, it was a little bit of both.

The ultimate irony of all this is that just that morning I MOVED the diaper cream (oh yeah, it’s diaper cream!) from on top of her little vanity to a small bin on top of her bookshelf.

Apparently it was safer in plain sight.
